Diocese Welcomes ArchbishopOn Saturday 7th November some of the congregation from St Chad’s were privileged to attend Blackburn Cathedral for the Diocesan Eucharist presided over by the Bishop of Blackburn and in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams. The Archbishop preached his sermon to a very large congregation and the wonderful choir sang three Latin anthems to music composed by Louis Verne, 1870-1937.After the service we had a short lunch break followed by an open forum in the form of a conversation between the Archbishop and Jack Straw MP and Secretary of State for Justice. The congregation were asked to put forward questions concerning current issues. Loud applause followed the Archbishop saying he is in favour of women bishops. This was a very memorable day.Margaret Baron
Parish Visit to ChesterOn Saturday 14th November a total of 48 people from St Chad’s and St Hilda’s enjoyed a very interesting visit to Chester. It was a packed programme aimed to suit different interests. For many of us the day started with a tour of the Cathedral. Our tour guide, Reg Taylor, was very informative, with added humour. The Cathedral, once known as St Werburgh’s Minster, eventually became a Benedictine Abbey. In 1541, after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, the abbey was given back as a Cathedral. The Diocese of Chester was created. There was time for lunch and shopping and then the day ended with Evensong sung by the Cathedral Choir and in which Bishop Alan Chesters, retired Bishop of Blackburn, took part. A good day was had by everyone.Thank you all for your support.Margaret Baron
